Spotlighted Teacher

Spring 2010

Each semester one teacher will be spotlighted who has demonstrated a best practice approach of implementing within the classroom the use of primary sources from the Library of Congress to develop high level inquiry thinking skills. During the Spring semester of 2010, the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources program at Quincy University has selected:

Mr. Mark R. McDowell
Social Studies
Quincy Junior High School
Quincy, IL

As an example in his lesson on the Emancipation Proclamation, To free or not to free - that is the question, Mr McDowell gives his students an indepth look into the decision Lincoln made when trying to decide whether or not to issue his Emancipation Proclamation. Students typically view Lincoln as the "Great Emancipator" but they often do not know how delicately he had to balance his pledge to keep campaign promises while attempting to win the Civil War.

Ambassador Teacher

An Ambassador Teacher persuades other teachers to use primary sources to enhance the learning experience of the students through either conducting a professional presentation to other teachers or publishing an article in a peer-reviewed education journal. They have also completed the requirements of a Primary Source Teacher and a Workshop Participant Graduate.

Primary Source Teacher

A Primary Source Teacher has created and taught to their student at least one lesson that uses primary sources in an innovative way to enhance the students learning experience. The lesson has been submitted to the Quincy University TPS program to be made available to other teachers through the project website. The teacher has also completed the requirements for a Workshop Participant Graduate.
